Minister Nguyễn Quân met with the Director of IAEA’s Atomic Security Committee

On December 8, 2014, Minister Nguyễn Quân met with Mr. Khammar Mrabit, Director of the Atomic Security Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who was paying a visit and had working session in Vietnam.
In the meeting, Minister Nguyễn Quân expressed his sincere thanks to IAEA’s support to relevant agencies in using atomic energy for peaceful purposes in general and for Vietnam’s nuclear power development in particular as formulation of legal and regulatory documents, human resource training, technical assistance, changing fuels for Đà Lạt nuclear research reaction pile… The Minister said that Vietnam has been revising some articles under the Law on Atomic Energy appropriate with international practices and actual situations, inputs and comments of experts from IAEA and of other countries in the world are extremely important.

The Minister hoped to strengthen more effective cooperation with IAEA, besides training for managers and technical officers it should advise Vietnam’s relevant agencies in this field, contributing to help Vietnam fulfil its commitment to become a responsible member in the international community of nuclear safety and security (ANHN).

Mr. Khammar Mrabit expressed his thanks to the Minister for spending time on meeting the delegation and highly appreciated the active cooperation between Vietnam and IAEA on many activities which have been implemented, among them the field of atomic energy security have been promoted more and more. He also informed the Minister of the purpose of this mission in order to discuss with Vietnam’s relevant Ministries and branches, review and update the Integrated Nuclear Security Supporting Plan (INSSP) to continue the implementation of activities on nuclear safety and security in Vietnam. The INSSP is a useful and comprehensive tool including supporting and implementing activities, which has helped Vietnam to establish the legal framework, prevent, discover and respond in ensuring the nuclear safety and security. He also expressed the commitment to provide supports in order to strengthen capacities of Vietnam’s relevant agencies in this field.
