Viet Nam – Cuba: Strengthening cooperation in the S&T field

In the discussion, Minister Chu Ngọc Anh affirmed the fact that Cuba’s delegation to visit Viet Nam and attend the Ministerial-level Discussion between the two countries has been an important event in the S&T cooperation in particular and in the traditional cooperation between the two sides in general. This event is more meaningful when our two countries have just organized the 55th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Cuba (1960-2015), the two countries have successfully organized the Party Congress in 2016 and moved towards signing the 20-year bilateral cooperation agreement on S&T in 2017.

Ministress Elba Rosa Perez emphasized that "Among the 6 prioritized strategies for the social and economic development which have been adopted in the VII Party Congress, 2 strategies are under the management of Cuba’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment".

She also expressed her attention to issues of technology innovation, social science and humanity study and hoped that Viet Nam could share with Cuba precious experience in these field as well as desired to learn about Viet Nam’s S&T development strategies.

In this discussion, the two sides also reviewed cooperation projects over the past time and cooperation directions for the coming time, at the same time discussed about methods so that the cooperation between the two countries is more efficient and practical for mutual benefits of the two sides. Over the past time, the two sides have carried out some joint cooperative research projects. These projects are very successful in terms of the scientific aspect and have significant meaning for the social and economic development, specifically project on “Transferring technology of building mega biogas tanks in Cuba”, project on “Study and cooperation to develop high-quality avocado in some suitable ecological areas of Viet Nam”, project on “Solutions for planning coastal public spaces of tourist urbans in order to strengthen access and adaptability with climate change”,..

Cooperation potentials on S&T fields between the two countries are significant. Viet Nam has many S&T strengths in agriculture (rice, coffee, fisheries...), telecommunications, electronics, computers, construction and construction materials. In returns, Cuba has its strengths in health, biology technology, pharmacy technology and tourism planning. Therefore, in order to make use technology strengths of the two countries, the two sides need to focus on developing cooperation projects on which the two side have their strengths as biology technology, biology technologies for health, agriculture, information technology in order to serve for the social and economic development of the two countries, Minister Chu Ngọc Anh emphasized.


In addition, in order to strengthen traditional relations between the two countries and two Ministries, it is proposed that the two sides promote exchange of ministerial-level delegations to discuss, work out directions and identify potential fields on which the two sides have strengths.

For some specific cooperation projects on biology technology as pesticide for mosquito larva by micro-organism, mixed micro Polysaccharide typhoid vaccine, asporous whooping cough vaccine … the two sides agreed by to be discussed in 34th session of Viet Nam – Cuba Inter-government Committee for review and implementation in the coming time.
